A time honored tradition spanning decades, the late great concert promoter Bill Graham is credited with commissioning the sometimes trippy, sometime psychedelic, always eye catching art work used to promote the events.

Bill Graham’s epic ” The Art of The Fillmore” collection — a series of original vintage concert posters commissioned by the late, great concert promoter — is now on display and available for purchase at a shop in Palo Alto. Photograph and Frame which has a location at 2086 El Camino Real in Palo and a store in San Francisco, has a partnership with Wolfgang’s Vault, a private company dedicated to the restoration and archiving of live concert recordings and music memorabilia that now owns and manages Graham’s collection.

Fillmore art is something special to San Francisco. When I saw MGMT there in 2010, I was psyched to receive an iconic promotional poster as a souvenir. In my rock ‘n’ roll fantasy, the same would have happened at the Fillmore decades ago, but at a Jimi Hendrix show.

Long before MTV broadcast music videos on television, or YouTube made performance clips viral on the Internet, Bill Graham was out making names for up-and-coming musical artists the old-fashioned way, promoting rock ‘n’ roll concerts in San Francisco and beyond with eye-catching posters.

Photograph and Frame in San Francisco’s Marina district is commemorating Graham’s legacy with “The Art of the Fillmore,” a collection of 230 concert posters from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s, commissioned by Graham, who died in 1991.

Each poster design was used to promote concerts at historic San Francisco venues including the original Fillmore Auditorium, Fillmore West, Winterland and Fillmore East in New York City…

The Art of the Fillmore collection is a series of vintage concert posters commissioned by the late great concert promoter Bill Graham (1931-1991). Born Wolfgang Grajonca, in Nazi Germany, Bill invented the business of concert promotion and is credited with discovering some of the biggest names in music, including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jerry Garcia, and Jefferson Airplane. The posters, used to promote concerts at the original Fillmore Auditorium (Fillmore & Geary), the Fillmore West (Van Ness & Market), the Fillmore East in New York City, and the Winterland Theater (Post & Steiner) span over 3 decades of the live music scene.

More and more people are aware of photography since the appearance of digital cameras; “It’s always on people’s minds,” says Fred Rubenstein, who recently opened Photograph on San Francisco’s Chestnut Street.

Coming from a family who had always been in retail, and with a background in custom framing, Rubenstein had been looking around for an original product and store idea. The digital revolution “got me thinking,” he said. “There was void in the retail market for finding high-quality, exhibit-grade framed photographs. There’s no place for people who want to design for their homes and not spend thousands of dollars.”
