Rusted Relics by Emerging Artist Ryan Buenning

Ryan sees beauty that exists in the obsolete and derelict remnants of the past, and painstakingly recreates them by hand.

His starting point is some form of scrap sheet metal from a local steel yard. The steel is then hand cut in three sizes, and laid out in the elements to develop a rich rust patina.  No accelerants or chemicals are used in this process – just water and time.

The aging process takes two to three months. The painting is performed freehand with a brush, and then distressed by whatever means necessary to create the look of an aged artifact.

Each painting is inherently unique in both production and result.  No two are ever alike.

Three sizes: 1′x3′, 2′x4′, and 4′x4′

About the Artist

Ryan has long been attracted to the discarded and rusted relics of the American highway. He sees art in signs of forgotten gas stations, motels, and truck stops. Perhaps it is a yearning for a bygone era or juxtaposition between promise and despair that drives his art. Ryan works from his home studio from the Twin Peaks district of San Francisco.

Original art only available at our SF store.
